On January 12, 2018 a LaBrum Cast writer went to visit the elective “School Beautification” to see what it was like in there. What is “School Beautification” you may ask? Well, it’s an elective where the students work together to make the school visually look better. LaBrum Cast was able to experience how the elective worked. One student even told our LaBrum Cast writer that they have some fun events coming soon. Emily Sarkissian stated, “We have a dress down day coming soon for a fundraiser, and much more that we can't tell”. Other students like, Karissa Woodman, Gabby Taurino, and Morgan Parkin told us that they are doing a type of tree that has hands for leaves with inspiring quotes on them for kids that come to school everyday feeling bad about themselves or just to lift someone’s spirit/make their day a little better. Karissa Woodman told our writer, “We are now making teachers’ classrooms beautiful as well”. So, basically they are now working on getting teachers classrooms to look colorful and inspiring, so the students feel more welcomed and excited to go to school. The School Beautification elective is working hard to make this school a better place for students and teacher alike; making this school a better place will appeal to everyone is a great way in the coming future. With only about two and a half weeks left until our PSSA testing, we decided to talk to a few students to see how they feel about it. For our sixth graders it’s their first PSSA in LaBrum. Our seventh graders are working extra hard this year because PSSA scores count a lot towards high school applications. Our eighth graders are working for the PSSA and algebra keystones. There is a lot of stress and even fear for all LaBrum students as we are getting ready to start the PSSAs. Here are a few quotes from our students Eighth Graders: Milan said “I am a little less nervous than last year because it doesn’t count as much for high school as seventh grade.” Tymere said “I feel comfortable about taking them this year.” Maria R said “I’m not scared and I may opt out.” Seventh Graders: Sofia said “I am annoyed about taking the PSSAs. There is more pressure this year. Our teachers are helping by going over the lessons from the beginning of the year.” Syeda said “I am nervous. There is definitely more pressure this year. We are going through all of our old lessons to prepare.” Sixth Graders: Katina said “ I feel some pressure this year. We our doing packets in class to prepare. I don’t want to take it.” Leanne said “I’m annoyed about taking them.” Overall, everyone has their own feelings and opinions on the PSSA’s and LaBrum Cast wishes everyone good luck on their testing! Throughout the week of 2/19/18 to 2/23/18, Milan Dukes, Morgan Parkin, Estephany Tamayo, and Sam Severns from the School Beautification elective came to a few students to make the 8th grade stairwell more vibrant. They asked Jayda Anderson, and Tori Marziani for help to write inspirational words on the walls. Ms. Ladue was the creator of this project and ran the elective as the whole. She provided materials such as paint, masking tape, and scissors to make the words. In the beginning, all 6 students taped up the words “dream”, “hope”, “learn”, and “ on the left wall of the stairwell. Then, at their lunch, they painted over the tape and peeled it off to reveal the words. A couple days later, students Morgan, Sam, and Estephany came up themselves to tape up the words, “kind” and “love”. Then again, all 6 students worked to paint over those words and perfect the others. On the last Friday of the week, Milan, Jayda, and Tori spent 2 and a half periods taping up the biggest word in the hallway-“collaborate”- and using all three available paints to make a sort of tie-dye effect on the letters. They laid down trash bags to protect the floor and thanked the custodian staff for letting them use the trash bags. After they finished the project, they peeled the tape off and were ecstatic to see the result. In the end the project came out great and they are very proud of it. Reporter: Hailie Helveston
